If you've come here to easily convert between units of time - you've come to the right place; the time unit converter will serve your every need. The time converter will answer all of the units-of-time-related questions that have kept you up at night, like:
how to convert units of time - minutes to hours, hours to days, hours to minutes, milliseconds to minutes, minutes to days, days to hours, days to seconds, years to seconds, etc.
how many minutes are in a week, how many months in 5 years, how many seconds in a week, how many days in 2 years, etc.
how long is 1 million seconds, how long is 120 minutes, etc.
If you've come here to check the date and time in other time zones - you've come to the wrong place, use our time zones calculator and Unix time converter instead. And if you need to answer questions like "how long is it until 2.09.2224?" or count the number days between two dates, check out the day counter.
How to use the time unit converter
To convert between time units, simply input the number you'd like to convert into the field with the appropriate unit. The time unit converter will calculate the value in all the remaining units, so just look for the unit you're interested in. This way, you can convert milliseconds to minutes, calculate how many days are in 2 years, and so on.
If a different arrangement of unit is more convenient for you, you can change their order by choosing the ones you need from the drop-down menu (found by clicking the unit itself) in any field.
If a different unit is more convenient for you, go to the bottom of the calculator, in the "Other time units" field, and select your preferred unit.
How the time unit converter works
In our time unit calculator, a year is equal to 365.25 days. This is an approximation of a sidereal year, which is the time it takes Earth to orbit around the Sun - on average 365.256363004 days (365 days 6 hours 9 minutes 9.76 seconds).
In the Gregorian calendar, which is used by most of the world, a year is 12 months, and a week is seven days long. A day is conventionally equal to 24 hours, an hour equal to 60 minutes, a minute equal to 60 seconds, and a millisecond equal to 1/1000 of a second.
From these assumptions, we can infer all the relations between the units used in the time unit converter. Let's sum them up:
1 y = 365.25 d
1 w = 7 d
1 d = 24 h
1 h = 60 min
1 min = 60 s
1 s = 1000 ms
where:
y - year
w - week
d -day
h - hour
min - minute
s - second
ms - millisecond
💡 While it takes about 365 for Earth to complete a turn around the Sun, other planets take longer or shorter. With the orbital period calculator, you can learn how to calculate the orbital period for any planet around the Sun or any other binary system!
How to convert between units of time - from hours to minutes, from years to seconds...
People haven't always had this handy time converter to assist them, so what did they do? Let's look at how you could approach converting between units of time by yourself.
If you want to convert from a "bigger unit" to a "smaller unit", you have to, so to speak, go through all the units "in between." If you wanted to know how many seconds there are in a week:
Look at the equations in the previous part of the text. From there, we know that one week is comprised of seven days. We now go to the next unit down, so we know that one day contains 24 hours. You proceed this way until you get all the formulas needed:
1 w = 7 d
1 d = 24 h
1 h = 60 min
1 min = 60 s
Substitute d with 24 h, h with 60 min, and so on until you reach the desired unit:
1 w = 7 * 24 * 60 * 60 s
1 w = 604,800 s
We arrived at the result - one week is equal to 604,800 seconds.
How to convert between units of time - from minutes to hours, hours to days, milliseconds to minutes...
And what if you want to go the other way round - convert from "smaller units" to "bigger units"? For example, want to know what part of a week is one second?
From the formulas above, you need to calculate what the units on the right side of the equation are equal to:
1 w = 7 d
1/7 w = d
(we divided both sides of the equation by 7)
d = 1/7 w
Do the same with all the equations, and you'll get:
d = 1/7 w
1 h = 1/24 d
1 min = 1/60 h
1 s = 1/60 min
Now, we want to go from a second to a week, so substitute min in the fourth formula with 1/60 h, then substitute h with 1/24 d, and so on, until you get:
1 s = 1/60 * 1/60 * 1/24 * 1/7 w
1 s = 1/604800 w
The result equals 0.00000165343 in a decimal form. You can also check in the time converter calculator (the value there is rounded).
